The reason why Disk Defragmenter is not functioning is because page file is turned off. How to turn the page file on, you need to do this: Click on Start - My computer, right click it and click on properties
In the Properties window that opens up, click on the Advanced Tab and in Performance Area click on the Settings button.
In the Performance Option window that opens up, under the Advanced tab, in the Virtual Memory Area, click on the Change button.
In the Virtual Memory window that opens there is an option, System Managed Size, select that and press on the Set button, followed by clicking on OK.
After which you need to restart the PC, right away, else all the settings that we made will be futile. The next time, after rebooting, the disk defragmenter will work fine.

I just use Diskeeper09 and set it to defrag automatically in real time. Never had a single problem and dont need to bother about defrag at all.
August 24, 2009 at 10:02 PM
I went through this step by stem as directed, defrag still doesn't work. Also when I do a search from goggle sometimes the search goes to a different site than the one I have choosen, ending up with a off the wall search. It appears that the search has been redirected.
Thank you for any help.

What's the error you are getting? My disc defragmenter used to give this error and followed steps helped me resolve it. So if you can tell where exactly you are getting stuck up, I can help u better.

Would request you to highlight the error, it will help us to resolve the issue you are facing with the defragmenter. This method worked fine for us, maybe you are missing out on something.
Regarding the search in Google, redirecting to some other site, please read through this post:
http://dummy-essentials.blogspot.com/2009/08/search-result-in-google-gets-redirected.html
Do let us know if it helped!

I have the same problem as the person above even the google thing. i have tried the option above but defragment still doesn't work. i also made a post about the google issue related to http://dummy-essentials.blogspot.com/2009/08/search-result-in-google-gets-redirected.html.
please HELP!!! frustrated as hell.
September 2, 2009 at 6:52 PM
Well, you have the answer for it!
Someone had a similar problem. In addition to defrag not running, the chkdsk as well as MS updates were not working, live updates (Mc Afee) were disabled too! Furthermore, webpages weren't opening as they should have. And it was all because the PC was infected with lots of viruses and trojans.
What we suggest is, run HijackThis (You can get it from here: http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html ) based on the result, delete the .exe files which are creating a mess, update your antivirus definitions, run a complete scan. Not only will the defragmenter work fine, but the search getting redirected, issue will also get solved. Ofcourse, if this doesn't help too, just shoot us a comment and we will see how else we can work it out :)

Hi, I tried everything you said on your blog to fix the disk degfragment still does not work. Plus I have the same problem when I type something to look up I get redirected to some other thing. Can you help me.
September 11, 2009 at 12:30 AM
@ Cheryl
If the disk defragmenter doesn't work following the steps mentioned there, then the problem is not with the defragmenter. Its probably because the PC was infected with lots of viruses and trojans.
What we suggest is, run HijackThis You can get it from here:
http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html
Based on the result, delete the .exe files which are creating a mess, update your antivirus definitions, run a complete scan. Not only will the defragmenter work fine, but the search getting redirected, issue will also get solved.
Before you run HijackThis, just follow the steps here, you would need to turn off the system restore.
(Right Click) "My Computer" - Click on "Properties" - Click on "System Restore" Tab - Check the box which says "Turn off System Restore on all drives" - Click on "Apply" and "OK" [This is to stop a reinfection]
Next, Clean Temp files, for this Click on "Start" menu on your taskbar, goto and click on "Run". In the "Run" window type: %temp% and delete all the files and folders there. To make things easy, you can download CCleaner from here (www.ccleaner.com) incase you don't have it installed yet. All you need to do is run the program to clean all the junk on the PC. [Before running, make sure all the boxes are ticked under the Windows and Applications tabs, including "Advanced" tabs(except for the Old prefetch Data option, this should be unticked) and your browsers should be closed.
Run Spy bot Search & Destroy (if you don't have it, you can get it from here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html
Do a full system scan.
Run your anti-virus program and again do a full system scan. Incase you don't have a good one, you can get, Avira Anti-Virus from here - http://www.free-av.com/
(Both of them are free and good enough to clean any viruses that are hitting your PC)
After cleaning the infecion, reboot the PC and turn the System Restore on.
Hoping this helps, but incase it doesn't and you feel you are stuck up with the same problem, please don't hesitate to write again. We'll work it out :) No worries!
Just to check, do you update the program definitions regularly for both Superantispyware and Malwarebytes?

Morning D,
Well some of it worked now when I look up things in internet explorer I can proceed with checking out there options but I still cannot get disk defragment to work. I THINK I followed your directions but ..... I have AVG so I didn't download your anti-virus. Any other suggestions? Thanks for the help so far.
September 11, 2009 at 10:14 AM
@ Cheryl
Glad that a part of the problem we were stuck up with, is solved :) AVG is good enough, so no prob. Moving on to the next step. Regarding, Disk Defragmenter, wanted to ask you, if you ever installed a third-party defragmenter like Diskeeper? Because at times, on uninstalling, it does not restore the built-in one correctly. Don't know what goes wrong where, but this is out of a personal experience. Incase yours is a similar scenario, try doing this:
Go to Command Prompt ["Start" Menu - "Run" - In the Run window, type: cmd] Once the window opens, type:
cd \windows\system32
Followed, which type:
regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll
regsvr32 dfrgui.dll
[To register defrag components]
Your disk defragmenter, might just start functioning after this. Incase it doesn't, do shoot us a mail, we will try something better :)
September 11, 2009 at 10:18 AM
Hi D,
Nope have never installed anything like that at all.
September 11, 2009 at 10:24 AM
@ Cheryl
Well, if you hadn't installed any third party defragmenter, the Command Prompt step won't be of much help.
Not an issue though :) We just received a comment from one of our readers that her disk defragmenter is working fine, after following the steps given below. So how about trying the same on your PC too? Chances are it would work fine, if there are some hidden trojans in your computer too, which actually don't allow the defragmenter to function well. So give this one a shot!
Download Trojan Remover [http://www.simplysup.com/] Once you download it, restart your PC in a Safe mode + Networking, install and Run it. Once it finds the problems, it will give you an option of resetting your drivers (if it doesn't, move on, it would automatically reset). Do that and then Trojan Remover will tell you it needs to restart your computer. Once it reboots, shut it down and reboot your computer, allowing Windows to start normally. Hopefully, all will be fine after that.
Our suggestion is to uninstall Trojan Remover as soon as it cleans your PC ~ don’t wait for the trial period to expire. (We left Trojan Remover on one of our PC's, and that machine mysteriously had the google redirect virus again shortly after the free trial expired. Can’t say they invented it, but the company definitely wants your money! It sure has a quick and very effective fix, but to be safe, get rid of it once it cleans your machine. It’s quite easily uninstalled and not worth the risk of it causing problems down the line.)

Hi D,
Me again only this time it is to thank you for all your help. I loaded the trojan remover, yes I had one it got rid of it. Yes, defrag once again works. One last question do I remove Hijack, Spybot and CCleaner or should I keep all three? Once again thanks for all the HELP.
You are now in my favorites list just in case.
September 11, 2009 at 10:51 AM
@ Cheryl
Glad to know its all working fine now :) Well, the only thing you need to uninstall right away is, Trojan Remover. Hijack and Spybot can be kept if you wish to but would suggest, keep the CCleaner. Its an awesome program that keeps a lot of clutter on your machine off the bay. Run it once every three to four days and everything will work well.
